How To Connect With Nature For Mental Health Benefits
Spending time in the British countryside may be more of a mental health advantage—and closer to the busyness of London—than you thought! If you’re looking for a taste of the countryside to reap the mental health effects of time spent outdoors, you don’t have to venture far out to Kent, UK. But whether you’re spending time on a farm, forest or an urban city park, taking time to connect with nature can significantly improve mind health.
The link between nature and mental health shows a reduction in anxiety, stress, depression and loneliness, as well as an improvement in mood, relaxation and a sense of community. As we’re halfway through Mental Health Awareness Week, here are some accessible ways to soak in the environment around you to support mental health.
1. Find a green space near you.
If available within your proximity, the most simple and free way to connect with nature to lessen anxiety and depression is by visiting a local park or farm. Starting with a quick internet search such as “park near me,” or “farm near me” may help you discover green spaces that you weren’t aware existed. Give it a try for yourself!
Once you’ve pinned down a park, forest, or farm near you to visit, your activities may include walking, running or cycling! For a refresh, grab a healthy snack from a nearby farm shop or food hut.
2. Maintain a healthy diet including fresh produce.
The benefits of a healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables include denser nutrient intake as produce loses nutrients as time passes and increased mood levels. Supporting local food initiatives such as shopping farm fresh produce at your local farmers market or farm shop also strengthens one’s sense of community and supports mental wellness. You can connect with nature and your local community by browsing in fresh air and chatting with other shoppers and vendors.
3. Spend time with animals.
Having a furry friend is the perfect reason to head outdoors for a walk or to visit a dog-friendly restaurant! Or, visit a petting zoo to connect with nature and animals for a mood boost. Who can resist smiling when spending time with critters in the fresh air?
4. Sign up for an outdoor activity or class.
Looking to try a new activity or improve a skill? Both kids and adults can reap the mental health benefits of spending time outdoors and a sense of routine and community by committing to a class or attending an outdoor event. Whether it’s tennis lessons, running groups or learning the ropes of beekeeping, check out what your local community has to offer!
5. Smell and shop for flowers.
The blossoming of spring and summer flowers could bring joy to anyone! Explore your local area to discover garden centres and flower fields, such as a flower field near you. And you can bring nature into your home to reap the mental health benefits of having flowers on your table by picking up a bouquet for yourself at a flower market or garden event.
6. Pick up gardening.
Research has shown a strong link between gardening and mental wellbeing. Community gardening promotes the positive feelings of belonging to a group and connecting with nature and others. It also reduces depression and anxiety and boosts a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when growing your own produce!
